AI-Enabled SoTL Dissemination: Reflecting on Past Practices and Reimagining Future Pathways
Overview
This International Collaborative Writing Group (ICWG) project explores the evolution of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) dissemination practices through the lens of emerging AI technologies, addressing a critical aspect of ISSOTL’s 20-year history while charting potential future directions. Our international collaborative group will document how knowledge sharing in SoTL has evolved over time, critically analyze current dissemination challenges, and investigate how AI tools might transform how we share teaching and learning scholarship.
Latest Updates
For this project, there have been designated two sub-groups. Both groups will be working simultaneously to create a platform that elevates practitioner and expert perspectives while contributing to broader conversations about responsible and impactful AI integration in teaching and learning.
Area of Action of First Group
For our first group, we are developing a narrative review that examines how the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) has been disseminated over time. The review focuses on both historical and emerging approaches to sharing SoTL findings. The guiding research questions for this group include:
- What have been the historically prevalent channels and platforms for disseminating SoTL findings?
- What empirical metrics are most commonly used in the literature to assess the effectiveness and impact of these traditional dissemination channels?
- What gaps exist in how impact is measured, and what alternative measures might better capture non-traditional forms of engagement with SoTL work?

Area of Action of Second Group
The second group is focused on developing a website designed to showcase diverse voices at the intersection of AI and SoTL, as well as AI and teaching and learning more broadly. As part of this effort, we are conducting interviews with leaders in AI and teaching and learningāparticularly those engaged in SoTLāas well as experts in areas such as institutional review board processes, ethics review, and research governance related to AI in educational contexts.
